Hackers breached the server of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, potentially gaining access to the personal data of some 10,000 graduates and applicants.

What type of personal information? Names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, home and email addresses, telephone numbers, test scores, previously attended schools and other school record data. Hundreds more had their university ID numbers potentially exposed.

What was the response? The school will pay for identity theft monitoring services for those students - about 7,000 - whose Social Security or university ID numbers may have been accessed.

Details: The IT staff discovered the breach last month but failed to immediately understand its full scope.
