Ferris State University applicants’ info on stolen laptop

A laptop stolen from an admission officer’s car at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. contained data on prospective students.

How many victims? 18,000 people who applied for admission this school year and next.

What kind of personal information? Names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and academic records. No financial information or Social Security numbers were compromised.

What is the response? The university is reviewing its data security policy.

Details: The laptop contained two levels of password protection.
