Stolen laptop contains personal data of 800,000 Gap job applicants

Gap revealed last week that a laptop, containing the personal information of about 800,000 job applicants, was stolen from an outside contractor.

What types of personal information were lost? Social Security numbers, as well as other personal data.

What was the response? The contractor notified law enforcement authorities.

Details: The information on the laptop was not encrypted.

The laptop contained personal information of people who applied for jobs with Old Navy, Banana Republic, Gap and Outlet stores in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada between July 2006 and June 2007.

Because Gap relies on multiple contractors, all applicants from that time may not be affected.

Quote: “We’re reviewing the facts and circumstances that led to this incident closely and will take appropriate steps to help prevent something like this from happening again,” said Glenn Murphy, Gap chairman and chief executive officer.
