5,800 Loyola University (Chicago) students at risk for ID theft

What happened? A hard drive belonging to Loyola University (Chicago) was discarded before its information could be erased.

What types of personal information? Social Security numbers for 5,800 students.

What was the response? Spokeswoman Susan Malisch sent a letter to all affected students saying they should take steps to safeguard their privacy.

The university is offering all affected students a year of free credit monitoring.

Malisch said there’s no evidence that the personal information has been accessed.

Details: Most of the Social Security numbers on the computer belonged to undergraduate students.

The desktop computer was used by the university’s Information Technology Services department.

“A university belonging to Loyola University (Chicago) was discarded before its information could be erased.”

What are some secure decommission procedures for discarding an entire university?
