Another Ohio breach: Laptop with personal information of 439 injured workers stolen from second state employee
Where was the data stolen? A laptop was stolen from the home of an auditor for the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.
When did the incident happen? May 30 – two weeks before Gov. Ted Strickland announced that a backup tape containing the personal information of 225,000 taxpayers had been stolen.
How many victims? 439 injured workers.
What kind of personal information? Stolen data included workers’ names, claim numbers, dates of injury, amount of compensation, and possibly medical diagnoses associated with workplace injuries.
Details: The laptop was password protected. Administrator Marsha Ryan was not informed of the incident until June 15.
What was the response? Internal investigators looked into the theft and notified police. Ryan ordered a review of the data on the laptop. Affected workers are being offered free identity protection services.
